Why Lombok's South Coast Deserves Its Own Chapter

While Bali's surf spots are legendary, Lombok's south coast has been quietly building a reputation among surfers who value uncrowded lineups, dramatic scenery, and a raw, unpolished energy that Bali long ago traded away. The stretch of coastline between Kuta Lombok and the remote breaks of Grupuk and Mawi is one of the most rewarding surf road trips in Southeast Asia.

This isn't a luxury trip. The roads are rough in places, the accommodation is basic outside of Kuta town, and the waves demand respect. That's exactly what makes it special.

The Route: West to East

Start: Selong Belanak

If you're driving from the north (from Mataram or the airport), Selong Belanak is your warm-up. A wide, protected bay with a consistent, gentle beach break, this is the place to shake off travel stiffness and reacquaint yourself with your board. The setting — a sweeping crescent of white sand backed by green hills — is among the most beautiful in all of Lombok.

Wave type: Mellow beach break | Best for: Beginners and intermediates

Mawi

A short but adventurous drive east of Selong Belanak, Mawi is a step up in intensity. The left-hand reef break here is powerful and barreling when the swell is up. The beach is wild and rarely crowded — partly because the access road is punishing to any vehicle without serious ground clearance.

Wave type: Left reef break | Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers | Note: No facilities; bring water and snacks.

Kuta Lombok (Hub Town)

Kuta Lombok — not to be confused with Kuta Bali — is the logical base for this road trip. The town has grown considerably in recent years, with surf shops, budget guesthouses, and a handful of excellent seafood warungs. The beach directly in front of town is a fine spot for a sunset session, but the serious surf is accessed by boat or by road to the surrounding bays.

Gerupuk (Inside & Outside Bowls)

Gerupuk is Lombok's most famous surf destination and one of the best all-round wave environments in Indonesia. Access is by short boat ride from the fishing village on the bay's edge, and once out there, you have a choice of breaks:

  • Inside Gerupuk: A long, forgiving right-hander perfect for intermediate surfers wanting to practice their turns on a proper reef.
  • Outside Gerupuk (Don Don): A heavier, more powerful wave that can produce serious barrels. Experienced surfers only when the swell is above 4 feet.
  • Grupuk Bay right: A mellow right that works well on smaller days and is popular with longer boarders.

Ekas Bay (If You Have Extra Days)

For surfers willing to venture further east, Ekas Bay rewards the effort with a powerful right-hand point break and the feeling of being genuinely off the beaten path. The area around Ekas is also beautiful for hiking and exploring the rugged south coast cliffs.

The South Lombok Surfing Spirit

What makes the south Lombok road trip memorable isn't just the waves — it's the feeling of discovering something that hasn't been fully packaged for mass consumption yet. Fishermen still outnumber tourists on most of these beaches. The morning light on the cliffs above Mawi is something a photograph can't fully capture. And there's a quiet pride among the surfers who've made the effort to get here — a sense of belonging to a community that still has to earn its waves.

Come with flexibility, respect the locals and the ocean, and this stretch of coastline will give you some of the best surf days of your life.
